HOW TO MAKE NIGERIAN PUFF PUFF
18 FEBRUARY 2023
Hi besties, welcome to my blog. Today, I will be sharing recipes on how to make Nigerian puff puff.
Puff puff is a popular street pastry in Nigeria, loved by everyone. It is a deep-fried dough, fluffy and soft. In Nigeria, everyone is excited at the mention of puff puff. You can only imagine how faces light up on seeing puff puff on the table as an appetizer in ceremonies. At that point, it's survival of the fittest. You snooze, you lose!
As a growing-up child, I would save all the money given to me by elderly people after running errands for them or by friends of the family who came to visit. I would use all of this to get some balls of puff puff. None of it ever made it back home with me. I would eat it all even before I walked halfway home. Puff puff was a major part of my childhood.
Puff puff can be enjoyed by eating it as it is, or with a sprinkle of granulated sugar on top of it, while others will prefer to eat it with some pepper sauce.
This pastry has a simple recipe. Some people like to spice it up by adding a few extras. My mom liked to add a blend of onions and scotch bonnet pepper to her dough for added flavor and it was amazing. If you are not a fan of these, you can decide to keep it simple.
Puff Puff can be messy in its preparation, but trust me, it is worth the cleanup. I will be sharing a video tutorial on how to make puff puff dough. If you are a Non-Nigerian and have never tried puff puff, trust me, you are missing out on this goodness and lushness.
INGREDIENTS
4 Cups of all-purpose flour.
Nutmeg
1 tbsp Yeast
Half teaspoon salt
3tbsp sugar (according to preference)
Sunflower oil
TIPS IN MAKING PUFF PUFF
- Do not overcrowd the frying pan. This will make your puff puff soggy and soaked in oil. it will also cause it to flatten and not give the swollen ball shape as it will not have enough space to fry properly.
- Make sure the oil is hot enough before frying the puff puff mix.
- Fry on medium heat so that your puff puff doesn't get burnt. Make sure to flip over intermittently while frying until you achieve golden brown balls.
- Make sure to mix the dough properly to incorporate air into it so that you achieve the swollen shape while it fries.
Remember, it is okay not to get it right on the first try, practice makes perfect!
